• We must defend the only laws we have to protect nature - NOW!

  • A few years ago, chancellor, George Osborne tried to get the EU to weaken these regulations but was sent off with a flea in his ear.

But it seems that the Tories are determined and have joined forces with big businesses and other member states, to put pressure on the EU to review them.

Environmental groups are alarmed as they can see the writing on the wall.  These laws have, in a world of a dramatic decline in insects, birds and biodiversity in general, boosted some very important species and ensured that habitats are protected.

Everything else that protects our countryside is policy – which can be tweaked and overriden. The EU Habitats Regulations are the ONLY LAWS that protect our wildlife.

I urge you to help the environmental groups to defend nature. See the RSPB’s website for how to respond to the consultation – http://www.rspb.org.uk/joinandhelp/campaignwithus/defendnature/
