• Tipton St John application for 56 homes refused

  • I spoke against the application at a packed meeting of Ottery St Mary Town Council’s planning committee back in January.  Tipton St John residents were out in force, many very concerned about the idea of so many houses outside the village’s development boundary, which would have grown the village by around one quarter.

Whatever your view on whether Tipton St John needs development it should be planned in a structured way, based on need, not demand.  Also, East Devon District Council should not be encouraging this sort of speculative application, which seem to be appearing all over the district.  Instead, there should be a responsible approach to development by restructuring the built-up area boundaries, based on housing needs assessments and in genuine consultation with residents. Unfortunately, the current system seems to be driven by the developer’s or landowner’s pocket.
