• Ottery Town Council sends strong message to DEFRA over beavers

  • Cllr Roger Giles proposed that the council ask East Devon MP, Hugo Swire, to insist that DEFRA return the beavers to the river as soon as they have been tested for a disease DEFRA claims they might have.

But most beaver experts are sceptical that they have the disease and instead fear it is a ruse to remove the animals from the river.

Devon Wildlife Trust has been lobbying DEFRA for them to be allowed to remain on the river monitored carefully by the trust.

Unfortunately, DEFRA seem only to want to listen to the Angling Trust, which has previously invited its members to shoot the animals on sight.

Councillors this evening voted unanimously in favour of writing to East Devon’s MP, Hugo Swire, to insist that the animals are returned to the river as soon as they have been tested.
