• Osborne: Shale gas is part of the future

  • In what sounded more like a threat than an announcement in today’s budget, he said:  “Shale gas is part of the future and we will make it happen!”

    Much of the UK, including parts of eastern Devon has been licensed by the government for the controversial practice of fracking to extract gas trapped inside underground rock.

    In America, campaigners have described the process as environmentally devastating, turning green fields into dirty noisy industrial plants, with reports of water contamination, as aquifers are damaged. 

    Many believe that the economics of shale gas extraction are very far from convincing, especially in this country.
