• No recommendation on badger cull at DCC cabinet

  • At the beginning of the meeting a member of the public presented Cllr Hart with a 6,000 name petition from the national online campaign group, 38 Degrees, which has already picked up the fact that the motion was on the table this morning.

Cllr Jill Owen, of the labour group, proposed the motion and argued that the badger cull was ineffective and lacking in evidence, as well as inhumane. She proposed looking into alternatives such as vaccination instead.

There were some brief speeches of support from opposing groups. Cllr Owen spoke, as well as Cllr Andy Hannon and Robert Vint and I also said a few words in favour of the motion.

The cabinet listened to us politely before Cllr Hart moved the debate on, referring the item to the full council meeting on Thursday 20 February, which starts at 2.15pm.
