• NIMBY - can countryside campaigners embrace the insult?

  • Personally, I have never accepted this term and cringe when I hear people say “I am not a NIMBY, but …” because this is exactly what developers and politicians want.  People feeling guilty and apologetic about objecting to development – like it is somehow selfish.  After all, the last planning minister Greg Clark, and the current one Nick Boles, are free and easy with their NIMBY jibes, supplementing them with perjorative remarks about how selfish NIMBYs are.

It is an interesting concept though and I would be interested to know what you think.  Does the term NIMBY have too deeply engrained negative connotations for countryside campaigners to embrace it, or should we take a more defiant approach?
