• NHS announcement: Ottery Hospital set to lose all beds and minor injuries unit

    17th September 2014 | News | Claire
  • At North, East and West Devon Clinical Commissioning Group’s (CCG) AGM this afternoon, proposals to close all hospital beds at Ottery and Axminster in East Devon, were revealed…. with interesting timing as the Scots go to the polls tomorrow to vote on independence!

The NHS also proposes to shut Sidmouth Hospital’s minor injuries unit.

Budleigh Salterton residents have already seen their hospital beds shut.

Other bed closures have been announced further elsewhere in Devon.

Roger Giles and I attended the AGM this afternoon and I was interviewed by Sally Mountjoy of BBC Spotlight and Sophie Pierce of BBC Radio Devon, following the consultation document’s publication at 4.30pm.

There will now be a 12 week consultation on the plans.

I had assumed that there would be some proposals for bed losses but am horrified that if the proposals are agreed, that all that Ottery will have left is an empty building, with a vague promise of it becoming a health and wellbeing “hub.”

Although the CCG is in debt to the tune of £14m, and says it must save money, there is no financial information or justification attached to the rather thin document.

Here are the proposals – http://www.newdevonccg.nhs.uk/get-involved/get-involved/community-services/101039

Here’s the link to BBC Spotlight’s iplayer, where you can watch the programme again – http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006pfr1 (it is the lead item).

Tune into BBC Radio Devon tomorrow (Thursday) morning from 6.30am, to hear more reaction.

The plans will be discussed by East Devon District councillors next Wednesday (24 September) at 7pm, at an open briefing session, at the Knowle, Sidmouth.

Tomorrow, Devon County Council’s health and wellbeing scrutiny committee (which I am a member of) will discuss the consultation process.

On Monday 17 November at 2pm, the health and wellbeing scrutiny committee will examine the proposals for bed losses across the county.
