• Motion on badger cull at defeated

    20th February 2014 | News | Claire
  • The motion was put by Cllr Jill Owen and was lost by 18 votes to 27, largely along party lines.

I argued along the lines that even if vaccination had some evidence to support it (and it actually has quite a lot) then it should be pursued first.

I said I was opposed to the cull on humanity grounds, on lack of evidence that it works, cost (£7m excluding policing costs) and impact on tourism.

Before coming to my view I spent an hour on the phone with my beef and sheep farming cousin in north Devon, exchanged emails with a retired vet and read many emails and documentation on the subject.

I suspect we haven’t seen the last of the subject yet!

Here’s the story in the Western Morning News.
