• Hugo Swire to try and tackle East Devon’s planning problems

    4th February 2013 | News | Claire
  • Myself and Cllr Roger Giles met with Mr Swire today, following a letter we sent him at the beginning of the year, detailing our deep concerns about EDDC’s planning policy, following two lost appeals at Feniton and Ottery St Mary last year.

In a meeting that lasted about half an hour, we set out the complex and worrying picture of what has happened in East Devon, where we are with the EDDC Local Plan and what role the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) has played in the unfortunate situation that EDDC now finds itself in.

We also updated Mr Swire on EDDC’s response to the problems in its paper to be debated at tomorrow’s development management committee meeting.

Mr Swire listened carefully to what we were saying and asked his secretary to arrange a meeting with fellow MP, Neil Parish, along with key officers and councillors from EDDC.

He also promised to meet with planning minister, Nick Boles, over our warnings that East Devon is one of many councils that are falling by the wayside on the five year land supply issue, following the pro-growth emphasis on development in the NPPF.

In a few months, there could be planning chaos in many areas of the country.
