Dear Hugo, you will remember that I wrote to you on 25 September concerning the above press release by Friends of the Earth, which warns that the capture of the Ottery beavers by DEFRA may breach EU law.  Can I assume that you have written to DEFRA asking for the suspension of the capture?

Today’s news by Alasdair Cameron from Friends of the Earth reveals that Public Health England does not believe that there is any risk to human health from the beavers living on the River Otter.  A direct quote from PHE is below –

“PHE accept that the main risk of an incursion is likely to be through international movements of pets, both legal and illegal… Therefore they are not convinced that the three Devon beavers necessarily represent a significant increase in overall risk.”

I am writing firstly to ask whether you have requested that the capture be suspended?

Secondly, following today’s news which makes DEFRA’s actions look like obsessional at best, I am asking you to represent Ottery residents and request that the capture programme is abandoned immediately.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly.
    Best wishes
    Claire
