• Honiton Maternity Unit - a good result!

  • As a mum who had firsthand experience of the fantastic service – widely regarded as one of the best units in the country – it was awful to think of the overnight service being lost in a misguided
attempt to standardise services. The sudden halt of overnight stays took place last February (2010), due to staffing issues. I led the campaign group ‘Honiton Maternity Matters’ working for
months lobbying the NHS, councillors and GPs.

In September last year councillors on Devon County Council’s Health Scrutiny Committee voted almost unanimously against withdrawing overnight stays. This led NHS Devon’s Board in
October, to agree a proposal that maternity assistants would be recruited to enable mums to stay overnight if a midwife agreed.

The maternity assistants are now expected to be in post in June, which is very encouraging.
