• Devon County Council’s cabinet defer tax avoidance motion to await govt guidance

    13th April 2016 | News | Claire
  • There is a massive and ongoing public concern about big businesses avoiding paying their fair share of tax and this motion – if all councils implemented it, would send a clear and unequivocal message that it is not morally right and nor should it be tolerated.

It would be really simple for officers to implement, with just an amendment to a questionnaire.

It would also, I would have thought, be welcomed by the myriad of small businesses in Devon, who would be penalised heavily for not paying their fair share of tax – and who have to watch as their multi-national rivals, get away with paying a fraction of what is required, due to the slickness of their highly paid accountants.

The motion has been created and is being promoted by the Fair Tax Mark and Christian Aid.

Further details on the motion can be found here – http://www.claire-wright.org/index.php/post/devon_county_council_cabinet_poised_to_decide_on_tighter_tax_avoidance_rule

It isn’t over yet however, as the motion comes before full council on Thursday 12 May.
