• Devon County Council urged to submit response to EU review over nature laws

  • The EU has launched a review of the Nature Directive, which protects many habitats and wildlife across Devon, including much of Dartmoor, the Jurassic Coast, Exe Estuary and the pebblebed heaths.

Many environmental groups are deeply concerned that any review will result in a weakening of the laws , which are the only legal protections for nature in the UK.

All other protections are policy-based and can be overridden.

Given that many of these specially protected places are in Devon, will the portfolio holder for the environment reassure the thousands of Devon residents who value nature, that Devon County Council will submit a response to the review making a strong case that the laws should remain in their current form?
