• New bill gags campaigners while lobbyists virtually unaffected

  • The new law, which was debated for the first time last week, with the draft bill only having been launched at the beginning of the summer recess, is returning to the House of Commons tomorrow.

Why is it being forced through so fast?

The legal advice is that MPs will be able to spend what they like on their campaigns, but charities, campaigning organisations and unions will be significantly restricted, in the lead up to any election.  Meanwhile the power of the shadowy lobbyists, who were supposed to be the focus for the bill, will be allowed to continue, virtually as they were before.

Having listened to the interviews in the 38 Degrees, I am even more worried that this government is plotting to lead us into a state something akin to Putin’s Russia.

Please write to Hugo Swire – .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or Neil Parish – .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) today or tomorrow morning and urge them to oppose the Bill.

I have tweeted twice to Hugo Swire now but so far no response…hoping to get reassurances from him asap that he will oppose the gagging aspect of the Bill.
